Andrew Jimenez took third place in the Intermediate boys shot put, throwing 38 feet, 6 inches at the USATF USA Track and Field Region 14 meet at Liberty High. The top three places of each event qualify for the Junior Olympics in Greensboro, N.C., July 27-Aug. 2.
The Bakersfield Northwest 9u all-star team captured the Cal Ripken Central California State Championship with an 11-1 victory Sunday over Clovis at Polk School in Fresno. The team consists of: Elijah Brum, Daniel Garcia, Andres Garza, Trey Harmon, Noah Hemphill, Andre Martinez, Josh Nunez, Nathan Ortiz, Jalen Smith, Ronnie Stapp and Jared Toothman. Hemphill was named tournament MVP, while Toothman, Martinez and Garza were all-tournament. The coaches are Henry Brum, Mike Garza and Jimmy Garcia.
The Bakersfield Northwest 11-year old All-stars compiled a perfect 5-0 record in winning the Central California Cal Ripken 11 Year Old Championship last week. They will now move on to represent central California in the Pacific Southwest Regional Tournament July 29th through August 5th in Fallon, Nevada.

The Bakersfield Heat Girls Basketball Club took first place and went undefeated at the California State Games in San Diego, July 17-19. The team: Emilee Parks, Keairra White, Lily Turner, Maya Zellanack, Lisa Marie Sanchez, Sabrina Lopez, Gabi Morales, Marley Dawson, Kate Simonton and Emily McCullah, and coach Hernan Santiago.
The Chivas under 10 boys team completed a very successful, undefeated season and championship in the Bakersfield Youth Soccer League. The Chivas team, coached by Jesus Olide, had a victorious 5-2 win over Bakersfield Academy on Sunday, July 19, 2009 at the Kern County Soccer Park.

BASEBALL

Bakersfield went 5-0 in the tournament, outscoring its opponents 53-5, which included victories over Clovis-Buchanan (21-0), a forfeit win over Selma and a pair of victories over Fresno-Bullard, 12-2 and 9-2. Bakersfield advances to the Pacific Southwest Regionals in Fowler, July 30-Aug. 4. Bakersfield is now 10-0 in all-star play, outscoring it's opponents 104-12. The team consists of: Elijah Brum, Daniel Garcia, Andres Garza, Trey Harmon, Noah Hemphill, Andre Martinez, Josh Nunez, Nathan Ortiz, Jalen Smith, Ronnie Stapp and Jared Toothman. The Bakersfield Southwest Phillies beat the Cubs 10-4 June 18 to win the Bronco A championship in the inaugural season at Aera Park.

EQUESTRIAN
Bakersfield's Maggie Waguespack captured four World Championship titles at the 2009 Summer World Championship Paint Horse Show in Fort Worth, Tex., June 24-July 4. Waguespack won the Walk-Trot Showmanship, Hunter Under Saddle, Hunt Seat Equitation and Trail classes showing CL Il Ring Your Belle, a 6-year-old mare. The duo bested fields of 18, 14, 12 and 14, respectively. Maggie and her horse earned earned the High-Point Walk-Trot Youth award, presented to the horse-and-rider team who accumulates the most points in that division. Walk-Trot Youth are classified as competitors 5-9 years old, who compete in regularly-judged classes omitting the lope.
Alexie Estrada of Bakersfield also captured a World Championship title. Estrada captured the Championship in Hunter Hack 14-18 showing Predictably Perfect, an 8-year-old gelding owned by Estrada and Don Glenn. In the class, horses are judged 70 percent on their ability to clear two small fences and 30 percent on providing a pleasurable ride at a walk, trot and canter on the rail. Estrada bested a field of 22 for the win. In addition, the pair earned Reserve World Championships in Hunt Seat Equitation 14-18, Western Horsemanship 14-18 and Western Riding 14-18. Estrada and Predictably Perfect's collective efforts earned them the All-Around Youth 14-18 award, presented to the horse-and-rider team that earns the highest points total in the division through competing in at least three categories.

The Chivas 10u boys completed an undefeated season and championship in the Bakersfield Youth Soccer League.
