The Bakersfield Bobcats took the bronze medal at the USTA/Junior Team Tennis Sectional Championships in Long Beach over the weekend. The Bobcats qualified to compete in a three-way playoff against Simi Valley and Newport Beach in late July to qualify for the National Championships in Mobile, Ala., in October. The Bobcats, a team of 10 players under age 14, brought together through the Junior Tennis Program at the Stockdale Country Club by director of tennis Greg Bolitsky. The Junior Team Tennis program, which runs throughout the year at Stockdale, is designed to introduce high-level competitive tennis to the youngsters by traveling as a team throughout Southern California and competing against other clubs and academies. "We are trying to get these young athletes more comfortable competing on a much larger and more competitive scale and help them realize they need to get out of their comfort zone here in Bakersfield," said Bolitsky.

The USTA Junior Team Tennis competition is held every Friday at the Stockdale Country Club and is open to any junior tennis player younger than 14.

The Bakersfield Brigade G90 won the U19 Gold Coast League Division 2008. For some players, this summer of 2009 will end a nine-year run of playing Club soccer for one team and one coach -- Simon Tobin. It's unique, in a culture where players seem to hop from one team to another, that 11 of the 21 girls on the roster have played together and for Tobin since 2004. Five of the girls have played for Tobin since they were in fourth and fifth grades! There are nine 2009 high school graduates and eight of them will be playing college soccer in California, Texas, and South Carolina. One player had an opportunity to continue her soccer career but will focus on her classes, as she has been accepted to Cal Berkeley. The squad for 2009, Bakersfield Gunners G91, will be competing in U18 Premier starting in August. Players are: Summer Chavez, Samantha Pena, Michelle Spinner, Kandace Mireles, Molly Brennan, Darci Smith, Brooke Dickens, Yesenia Reyes, Mariah Alvidrez, Ilyssa Espiritu, Brittany Thomas, Ellie Hight, Michelle Granillo, Caitlin Witwer, Becky Johnson, Monica Diaz, Hillary Ojeda, Laura Hicks, Sarah Reed, Colleen Reed and Allyssia Vasquez.

The Mets beat the Cardinals 12-2 to win the Mustang A League championship in the inaugural season for Bakersfield Southwest Baseball at the new Aera Park baseball complex. Team members: Nicholas Lundy; Matt Borda; Luke Fringer; Easton McMurray; Jared Adelman; Jack Tobias; Ethan Van Horn; Justin Barnes; Jack Minor; Sean Hatten; Garrett Mosley; Bryson Faulconer, assistant coaches Troy Fringer, John Hatten, and manager Brock McMurray.

Asia Adell, 17, of Fresno and Meghan Shain, 14, of Bakersfield tied for third in the Northern California PGA Championships held at Spring Creek Golf & Country Club in Ripon, CA.

Adell shot a 78 in the Girls 15-17 bracket stroke play to earn a spot in the Championship flight match play. Shain shot a 77 to take second place in the girls 12-14 bracket behind San Francisco's Alexandra Wong's 75 and both Shain and Wong were advanced into the Championship flight on the basis of their low scores.

Adell met Joi Pentin,17, of Pleasanton in the first round of match play and came away with a 3&2 victory over the Berkely-bound Pentin. Shain drew Wong,14, and jumped out to a six hole lead before coasting in with a 5&3 victory to reverse their stroke play result.

Adell's next opponent was Christine Uhalde,17,of Modesto and Adell put her away with a 4&2 decision. Shain met up with tournament favorite Brenna Nelson, 17, of Monte Sereno. For the second straight match, Shain had to face off against a stroke play medalist as Nelson won the 15-17 bracket with a 73. Nelson jumped out to a four hole lead in the first five holes and it appeared a route was on. But Shain fought back with consecutive par-5 birdies on holes 8 and 9 to draw within one at the turn. Nelson came back to go three up before Shain began another rally, finally catching Nelson with a long putt on 18 to draw even. Shain parred the first hole in sudden death and watched as Nelson slid her par putt past the hole.

Adell finally met her match in Taylor Camany, 16, of Salinas falling 5 and 4, in the semifinals. Camany, a Hank Haney School product, used her steady play and short game to take control. Shain also met her demise against Hannah Suh, 15, of San Jose, taking it to the 17th hole before succumbing 3 and 1. Suh was redhot shooting 2- under on the back nine. Shain, down one stroke at the turn, shot even par on the back only to lose a pair of holes to Suh.

Suh went on to decision Camany 1-up in the finals for the title.
