Liberty High graduate Kristi Kehoe just continues to amaze.
First, she defies the odds, becoming one of the few Bakersfield natives to ever play NCAA Division I hockey, but Friday she was given another rare opportunity.
Kehoe joined her Northeastern University (Boston) teammates on the ice for the Sun Life Frozen Fenway, playing in the first women's college outdoor hockey game.
"It still really hasn't hit me that it really happened," said Kehoe, who met a few current Boston Red Sox players (she's not sure which ones) and received a tour of the team's lockerroom, batting cages and dugout. "It's really hard to talk about because it was such a great experience."
Northeastern (12-5) lost the game 5-3 when New Hampshire rallied from a two-goal deficit, but the experience was one Kehoe will not forget.
"Every thing was unbelievable," Kehoe said. "I mean, playing in the snow, outside, at Fenway Park ... that's something I never thought I'd ever say."
With a light snow falling, Kehoe had an assist at the 7:28 mark of the second period to give her team a 3-1 lead with her parents, Rick and Michele, grandmother, Roz, and best-friend Danielle Nickelberry in the historic Fenway Park stands.
"It was just all smiles," Kehoe said. "You didn't see one person on our team without a smile. I had one on my face the whole time. Every time I stepped out on the ice I was just amazed I was playing in the snow. It was awesome."
Kehoe continued her strong play Monday night, scoring a goal and assisting in two others in an 7-4 victory over Boston College. She now has team highs of 10 goals and nine assists this season.
