CLOVIS -- Jordan Burris scored a Stockdale High-record 52 points Monday to lead the Mustangs to a 78-75 victory over Sherman Oaks-Notre Dame in the quarterfinals of the Clovis Elks Invitational basketball tournament.
Burris' output tied four others for the fourth best single-game total in Central Section history, according to section sports historian Bob Barnett of Fresno. McFarland's Eliseo Santillano set the section's single-game scoring record of 65 in 1992.
Stockdale will play in a semifinal at 6:30 tonight against Clovis. which defeated Simi Valley-Royal on Monday.
Stockdale coach Oliver Brown said the 6-foot-6 Burris consistently beat his defender, the opposing team's tallest player, to the rim.
"He was big-time, and he was rebounding, too," Brown said. "It was pretty weird to watch. We'd isolate (Burris and his defender) at the top (of the key), and look for them to double (-team) him so we can move the ball ... And they didn't double him. ... Jordan just went by him."
Brown said Burris also got a fair portion of his points on free throws, as well as a pair of 3-pointers. Statistics, other than point totals, were not available.
