Bakersfield College's Kyle Witten was named the Western State Conference South Division pitcher of the year.

The Renegades, who went 28-16 and placed second in the Western State Conference South Division with an 18-10 conference record, is seeded 11th in the 16-team SoCal playoffs. South Coast Conference champion Cerritos (29-14 overall, 20-4 conference), is seeded sixth.

“That’s fine with us. We’re just happy to go,” said BC coach Tim Painton.

BC has not faced Cerritos this season, Painton said.

“They’re supposed to have real good pitching,” Painton said. “I talked to two people who saw them early in the year. I’ll try to get more information on them the next few days.”

The BC-Cerritos winner continues on in the playoffs, which will conclude with the state championships in Fresno over the Memorial Day weekend.

WITTEN TOP WSC PITCHER

Kyle Witten, Bakersfield College’s sophomore pitcher, was selected Pitcher of the Year for the Western State Conference South Division by WSC baseball coaches during an all-conference meeting Sunday.

Witten was one of three Renegades to earn first-team All-WSC honors. The others were outfielder Casey Brown and infielder Brandon Boren.

Witten, Brown and Boren were unanimous selections, according to BC coach Tim Painton. That allows all three to be considered for All-Southern California honors when that team is selected during the state Final Four.

“If they get through the All-Southern California, we can put them up for all-state and All-American,” Painton said.

Four Renegades were named to the all-WSC second team: outfielder Tyler Garewal, infielder Jeff Burleson, designated hitter Dylan Nasiatka and pitcher Jared Hoyt.

Honorable mention selections were infielder Fabian Rivera, pitcher Jeremy Gonzales and first baseman Matt Martin.

“I figured it would shake out that way,” Painton said of BC’s all-conference selections. “There were an awful lot of good outfielders in our conference and some pitchers put up some good numbers. I felt like the guys from Bakersfield College who received recognition deserved what they got.”

Brian Hernandez, an infielder from WSC South Division champion College of the Canyons, was named Player of the Year for the conference. Canyons coach Chris Cota was selected Coach of the Year.
