That was the opinon Thursday of BC coach Tim Painton after his Renegades ended their regular season with a 5-3 loss to Los Angeles Valley College at Gerry Collis Field.
BC, which clinched its playoff berth Tuesday when it wrapped up second place in the Western State Conference South Division, will learn Sunday who it faces in a best-of-three playoff series next Friday and Saturday. The Renegades will be on the road, Painton said.
In the meantime, Painton plans on trying to improve the team's offense.
"During the season, you don't have a lot of time to work on things. You're playing every other day," Painton said. "We've got to change some things. We're not getting it done offensively."
Valley won Thursday's game by collecting two triples and three singles, all with two outs, during a four-run fifth inning.
BC scored its runs in the sixth on singles by Brandon Boren and Casey Brown, a fielder's choice RBI grounder by Jeff Burleson, an RBI double by Travis Morgan and an RBI single by Tyler Garewal.
But Valley relief pitcher Drew Vassil then entered the game and retired 10 of the final 11 Renegade batters. The only hit was a pop fly triple by Boren that appeared to land in foul territory down the right field line.
Cougars fall short in finale
PORTERVILLE -- Tyler Smith went 2-for-5, including a two-run single during a five-run eighth inning, but the Taft College baseball team came up short in a 7-6 season-ending loss to Porterville.
The Cougars (11-33, 5-19 Central Valley Conference) trailed 7-1 entering the eighth.
Rick Johnston finished 2-for-4.
BC's O'Leary advances
SANTA BARBARA -- Bakersfield College freshman Katie O' Leary advanced in singles and also in doubles with Jennifer Kelly in the Southern California Regional Tennis Championships.
O' Leary defeated Steffanie Mendez of Cerritos, 6-2 6-2, to advance to today's singles round of 16. O'Leary and Kelly defeated Patricia Tebeau and Victoria Andrade of Riverside City, 6-4, 6-3, to advance. If they win today, they will advance to the state finals next weekend in Claremont.
The state's No. 2 Vickie Reibstein of Grossmont defeated BC's Shabrena Dickerson 6-3 6-3.
