Former Bakersfield Jam coach Scott Roth is getting a chance to coach against NBA competition.

At his command will be an all-star team of NBA Developmental League players, including the Jam's own Trey Johnson.

Roth will coach the NBA D-League Select team in the 2009 NBA Summer League for a five-game schedule at Cox Pavilion and the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.

Johnson is one of 10 D-Leaguers to make the team. He led the Jam with 20.7 points last year and was twice called up by the Cleveland Cavaliers for 10-day NBA contracts.

The Jam returned to business last month after briefly folding this spring. They will play home games next season at the Jam Center on Norris Road instead of spacious Rabobank Arena.

Roth, though, will not be on the sideline, Jam minority owner David Higdon told The Californian last week. After leading Bakersfield to its first playoff appearance, he began seeking other jobs after the team folded and won't be retained.

He does get one more go-round with Johnson, however. The D-League Select team's Summer League schedule begins at 1 p.m. Monday against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
