College roundup: Taft earns first win of baseball season

TAFT -- Stefan Norman's two-run home run broke a 2-2 tie in the third inning and Taft College went on to beat Cabrillo 8-3 Friday afternoon.

Taft (1-2) added three runs in the eighth, keyed by Michael Hayes' two-run single.

Dominic McGovern went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Travis Derby and Anthony Rodriguez added two hits each for Taft. Devin Thomas tossed three scoreless innings of relief with three strikeouts.

BC's Griffin wins tennis flight at Modesto

MODESTO -- Bakersfield College's James Griffin won the No. 2 singles flight at the 36th annual Modesto Junior College tournament Friday.

Two other BC players reached the semifinals of their respective flights before losing. In the No. 1 bracket, BC's Nick Jacobs went 1-1, beating Lucas Wettsten of College of the Sequoias, 6-3, 6-2, and then losing to top-seeded Kirill Sinitsyn of Fresno City College, 6-0, 6-1.

CSUB men swimmers fall to Stanford

Matt Parsonage won the 100-yard breaststroke, Bryce Ogden won the 3-meter diving event and a number of Roadrunners earned runner-up times Friday at the Hillman Aquatics Center as the Cal State Bakersfield men's swim team lost to No. 2-ranked Stanford, 162.5-121.5.

Parsonage's winning time was 58.04 seconds, with teammate Chad McKenzie clocking 58.23.

Other seconds were posted by Luka Leskur in the 100 back (51.42), Jay Jones in the 200 fly (1:55.59) and McKenzie in the 200 breast (2:08.86).

The 200 medley relay team of Leskur, McKenzie, Parsonage and Malcolm Reid placed second (1:34.26).

Logan Peeples had a personal best time of 1:59.81 in the 200 fly while Vance Elmore set a personal record in the 500 free.

Odgen won the 3-meter event with a 301.35 and was second in the 1-meter board with a 262.97.
