College roundup: CSUB golfer Garcia wins with 8-under 64

LAYTON, Utah -- Levi Garcia, a junior on the Cal State Bakersfield men's golf team, shot an 8-under-par 64 on Tuesday to earn the individual title at the Purple and Red Invitational at the Valley View Golf Course in Layton, Utah.
Garcia, a transfer from Allan Hancock College, opened the day in a tie for 14th place. He had eight birdies Tuesday and finished with a 9-under-par 207, two strokes better than Sacramento State's Jake Johnson. The 64 was CSUB's lowest round since Kevin Kelbe shot a 64 in 2000 at the Family Motors Invitational at Seven Oaks CC.
CSUB tied for fourth at 874 score, seven strokes behind winner Univeristy of Utah.
CSUB's James Moseley shot a 1-over 73 Tuesday and tied for 10th in the individual standings with an even par 216.
Other CSUB scorers: Daniel Petta tied for 36th (224); Kyle Morrison tied for 48th (227) and Jason Errecart tied for 57th (231). Petta shot 73 Tuesday. Morrison and Errecart both shooting 76s.
BC edges Glendale in soccer
Terryn Soelberg scored her fifth goal of the season, giving Bakersfield College a 1-0 women's soccer win over Glendale in a Western State Conference opener.
Amber Beckham split two defenders on a pass from the right side, finding a wide-open Soelberg about 12 yards from the goal. Soelberg quickly scored.
BC (3-4) had a strong match from goalkeeper Taryn Wilson.
McWhorter tops 1,000 kills
Kate McWhorter, a senior outside hitter at UMass Boston and a graduate of Stockdale High School, surpassed 1,000 career kills on Saturday in a 25-18, 25-11, 25-23 win over Eastern Connecticut.
UMass Boston is an NCAA Division III school. McWhorter transferred there after playing at Cal State Bakersfield. The Beacons are 13-2 this season.
Against Eastern Conn., McWhorter added four aces, 10 digs and two blocks. She had 304 kills at CSUB and has 700 at UMass Boston.
