SAN MARCOS -- Bakersfield College qualified five wrestlers for next weekend's California State Junior College Championships during Saturday's Southern California Championships at Palomar College.
Mark Collier was BC's top finisher, placing second at 125 pounds. Jason Pendleton was third at 165; Lance Castenada fourth at 174, Jonathan Gomez fifth at 141 and Tyson Pinon sixth at 197. Jawayne Fambrough placed seventh at 149 and is an alternate.
BC coach Bill Kalivas said Fambrough has a chance to slip into the state meet because a wrestler in his weight class who placed ahead of him suffered a broken hand.
The two former football players who hoped to make their debuts Saturday were not cleared to compete for BC, Kalivas said. They were 184-pounder Pablo Martinez and heavyweight Gerardo Hernandez.
"Those kids were really disappointed," Kalivas said. "And they each had a good chance to qualify for the state meet. ... I don't know a definitive answer why they weren't allowed to compete."
CSUB women lose 5th straight
BERKELEY -- The CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team dropped its fifth straight game, 86-56 to Cal at the Cal-Berkeley tournament.
The five-game losing streak is the longest in the 12-season history of CSUB women's basketball. The team lost four straight three times.
The Roadrunners (2-6) suited up only six players because of injuries. Among the absent players were starting point guard Marilyn Naderhoff and starting guard Tyonna Outland.
Lauren Carter scored a career-high 19 ponts for CSUB and Kristine Herman added 13 points.
CSUB trailed 44-30 at halftime and pulled within 48-36 with 16:22 left in the game. But Cal outscored CSUB 20-6 over the next eight minutes to break it open.
"I thought we competed really hard for the entire game," said CSUB coach Greg McCall. "We had our opportunities to score but we weren't able to make enough shots to take advantage.
CSUB concludes tournament play today at noon vs. Prairie View A&M (1-6).
