Cal State Bakersfield's backcourt depth has taken a hit with the loss of junior point guard Alex Johnson, who suffered a season-ending knee injury during a preseason workout.

Johnson had surgery Wednesday to repair an anterior cruciate ligament.

Johnson, from Toronto, has led CSUB in 3-point field goal shooting percentage the last two seasons.

He led the Roadrunners with 89 assists last season and his 49 3-pointers was second on the team to Trent Blakley's 51.

A 5-foot-10 guard, Johnson started 17-of-26 games as a freshman and 19-of-29 games last season.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Pepperdine's Michelle Manning scored in the 61st minute and the Waves made that stand up in a 1-0 win over the Cal State Bakersfield women's soccer team.

CSUB (4-8-1) goalkeeper Kym Gause had five saves. Pepperdine (7-4-0) had a 9-7 edge in shots.

CSUB has not scored in its last three matches and has only one goal in its last six matches.

"We obviously have been struggling to score goals and that is something we are continuing to work on," said CSUB coach Nicole Van Dyke.

CSUB plays at Long Beach State at 3 p.m. Sunday.
