Sophomore guard Bryan Emanuel, one of the top defenders on Cal State Bakersfield's basketball team, will not play this week after suffering a left knee injury late in Saturday's loss at UC Irvine.
Freshman guard Marcus Hall, who suffered a high ankle sprain in the first half of that game, will be a game-time decision Wednesday when CSUB (5-17) plays host to Cal State Northridge (9-14) in a 7 p.m. game at Rabobank Arena.
CSUB coach Keith Brown said Emanuel visited team orthopedic surgeon Dr. Chris Hamilton on Monday and will need an MRI to determine the extent of the injury.
Emanuel was hit while going up for a layup and landed awkwardly while crashing into the basket support in the Bren Events Center at UC Irvine. Emanuel needed crutches to leave the floor Saturday and was still on crutches Monday, Brown said.
"He will not be available this week," Brown said, referring to the Northridge game and Saturady's home game against UOP.
CSUB will fly to Idaho for two games next week, and Brown said it was unlikely Emanuel will be making that trip.
Hall was held out of practice Monday and won't practice today, Brown said. The freshman guard from Bakersfield Christian High School has been in CSUB's starting lineup in recent games.
"We'll make an assessment at the shootaround Wednesday," Brown said. "He had a high ankle sprain on the same ankle in high school, so it's a repeat injury.
"High ankle sprains are a little longer lasting injury. It's certainly not as severe as it was a year ago."
Brown said playing time for various players will increase with Emanuel out and Hall possibly sidelined.
"It's not going to be one guy," Brown said. "We've had some guys progress -- James Albright has made progress, Donald Johnson is showing real progress, Cory Brown has been playing good minutes. ...
"It's all those guys who will absorb some of that (playing time)."
Golf
Junior Daniel Petta had CSUB's low first round, a 1-over-par 73, and followed with an 82 as the Roadrunner men's golf team opened its season at the University of San Diego Calloway Invitational at Rancho Santa Fe.
The 13-team tournament, at The Farms Golf Club, includes 71 players.
After two rounds, SMU leads the team score (575) and has the top individual performer in Matt Schovee (71-67-138; -6). Host San Diego trails by six shots (581).
No CSUB players were in the top 40 after Monday's play.
CSUB sophomore Jason Errecart matched Petta's 73 in the second round after shooting 81 in the first. Junior James Moseley had rounds of 81 and 76.
The final round concludes today.
