FULLERTON -- Reigning NCAA champion Jake Varner of Bakersfield and Cal State Bakersfield'a Mitch Monteiro were victorious Sunday at the 44th National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic at Cal State Fullerton.

Top-ranked Varner wrestled to his third career victory at the All-Star event in a rematch of the 2009 NCAA final he won last spring. The senior 197-pounder controlled Nebraska's Craig Brester by decision, 5-3.

Varner, a two-time state champion at Bakersfield High, recorded a takedown, reversal and had the riding time advantage in the match. Brester's three points came on escapes.

Monteiro, ranked No. 6, scored a takedown in the final seven seconds against second-ranked David Zabriskie of Iowa State to claim a 4-3 win in the heavyweight match.

Monteiro was the first Roadrunner to be selected as an NWCA All-Star since Stephen Neal earned the honor in 1999.

CSUB's Elijah Nacita and Riley Orozco were scheduled to compete in a pair of exhibition matches, but the matches were scratched due to a last-minute change in the 141-pound All-Star competitors and an injury to Orozco's opponent.
