A slow start by the Cal State Bakersfield men's soccer team led to three first-half goals by Sacramento State and the Hornets held on for a 3-1 victory in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action Sunday on the Main Soccer Field at CSUB.

The Roadrunners (6-6-2, 1-3-0 MPSF), playing without starting defenders Peter Carlson (injury) and Wayne Lampart (suspension), struggled to organize their back line early on and Sac State (8-5-1, 4-0-0) took immediate advantage.

Ernesto Carranza scored two goals and David Norton also converted for the Spartans.

The 'Runners got on the board in the 72nd minute when Joe Polifroni tallied his first goal of the season. After working the ball up the right side of the pitch, Jesus Sanchez crossed a ball into the mix where Ken Taylor was able to flick it on to Polifroni for a header from one yard out.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

San Jose State earned a 2-0 shutout against the Cal State Bakersfield women's soccer team at CSUB. The 'Runners (5-10-2) could not prevent the Spartans (10-4-3) from extending their school-record unbeaten streak to 13 matches.

The Spartans tallied goals in the 52nd and 77th minutes by Kelsey Lord and Katie Bonadies, respectively.
