Ground-breaking for the $1.5 million facility was expected to begin today, according to Joe Colombo of Colombo Construction Co., who is responsible for coordinating the field's construction and a member of CSUB's baseball advisory committee.

But Kevin Gilmore, CSUB's assistant athletic director, said a site study must be completed first because too much time has elapsed from a similar study done previously. Work cannot begin until this study has been completed, Gilmore said.

The site study examines various aspects of the project, including environmental issues, Gilmore said. If everything is in place, he added, construction could begin within a few days.

Once construction begins, Colombo estimated that it would take about 15 weeks to complete.

CSUB coach Bill Kernen said practice will begin in early October for the Roadrunners' inaugural baseball program, which has its first season in the 2008-09 academic year.

Kernen said it is possible practice could be held at the new facility before its completion if the construction is far enough along.
