Hansen was the head assistant coach for North Carolina's men's and women's teams from 2003-06.

He has coached 15 years at the NCAA Division I level.

He has helped develop Olympians, USA National Team members, Olympic Trials qualifiers, USA Swimming Association national qualifiers and NCAA Championship qualifiers.

He was the head men's and women's coach at Virginia Tech for two seasons, where he compiled a 36-16 record.

In the 1997-98 season, he recorded the first double-digit win totals for a single season in the programs' history.

The men's team was 10-3 and the women went 12-1.

"There is a great group of young talent here at CSUB and I am excited to help bring them to the next level," Hansen said in a release. "It's a great opportunity to be a part of a team continuing the move to Division I. There is a great history of success at the Division II level and now we want to start getting athletes to nationals at Division I."

Prior to his time with the Tar Heels, Hansen was the men's and women's head assistant coach at Nevada-Las Vegas, where he helped develop 10 NCAA qualifiers and eight All-Americans.

Hansen replaces Morgan Bailey, who resigned from CSUB on March 25 after two seasons as head coach so he could pursue a career with the FBI.
