Local report: Pitton shines in goal as Condors silence Grizzlies 1-0

Bryan Pitton stopped all 38 shots he faced and Aaron Lewadniuk scored the lone goal as the Bakersfield Condors beat the Utah Grizzlies 1-0 on Friday night at West Valley City.
It was the first shutout of the season for Pitton, who entered the game with a 3.80-goals against average and .884 save percentage.
Lewadniuk, acquired from Idaho in a trade for Mathew Sisca, scored his first goal as a Condor 13:30 into the second period.
Pitton was at his best in the third period as Bakersfield was out shot 21-2, the most shots the Condors have allowed in a period this season. Pitton made several of those saves in the final frantic two minutes as Utah ended the game with a two-man advantage due to a Bakersfield penalty and pulled goaltender.
The shutout is just the second this season for Bakersfield (10-27-3), which snapped a three-game losing skid. Matt Keetley stopped 42 shots in a 4-0 win at Alaska on Nov. 2.
The Condors were playing one skater short as center Robby Dee was loaned to the Abbotsford (B.C.) Heat of the American Hockey League and Hans Benson was suspended by the league.
Dee, acquired by the Condors from Florida on Dec. 1, is second in scoring for the Condors with 26 points. Eighteen of those points -- nine goals, nine assists -- have come in 20 games with Bakersfield.
"We want our guys to do well and move on to the next level," Condors coach Matt O'Dette said. "At the same time it hurts to lose a guy like Robby Dee, but that's pro hockey."
Dee played in Thursday night's game for the Heat.
Benson was suspended one game for being the aggressor in a fight in the final five minutes of Thursday night's 6-3 loss to Utah and assessed and given another game as supplementary discipline.
The Condors begin a six-game homestand on Tuesday night hosting the Alaska Aces.
College swimming
Isabell Nystrom won the 500-yard freestyle, was on the winning 200 free relay team and had a personal best in the 1,000 free to lead the way for CSU Bakersfield's swimming team in a 156-104 loss to San Jose State, 156-104.
Nystrom clocked 5:18.07 in the 500 free and 10:30.89 while taking second in the 1,000. She teamed with Rachel McCall, Chelsea Ankeny and Sara Brady for a 1:42.57 in the relay.
Other top performers for CSUB were Louise Westergren, who won the 50 butterfly (26.88) and was third with a season-best 54.07 in the 100 free; Madie Goodvin, who won the 200 IM (2:20.50); and Jordan Reed, who won in diving (227.40)
McCall had her fastest times of the year when placing second in the 100 breast (1:05.20) and 50 free (24.02). Brady had a personal record when placing sixth in the 100 free (55.90). The women's team plays host to UC Davis today at 1 p.m.
Track and field
CSU Bakersfield senior Michael Davis won the 55-meter dash in a meet-record 6.35 seconds to lead the Roadrunners at the Run For The Dream meet at Fresno.
Jordan Taylor (6.40) placed second and Justus Mora (6.66) was fifth.
Other standouts for CSUB: David Charleston (2nd, high jump, 6-4; 4th long jump, 20-5; 7th, triple jump, 42-113/4; Thomas Judge, 3rd, weight throw, 49-08.1/2; and Collin Ellis, 4th, shot, 48-71/4). The CSUB women were led by the 4x145 relay team of Taevionna Wilson, Alyssa Page Antionette Garrett and Princess Watts who were second in 1:15.40.
