Dec. 13 community sports accomplishments: Local power lifter wins 2nd world title

Dudley-Robey.JPG Edward "Doctor Bench" Dudley-Robey, M.D., of Bakersfield won the International Powerlifting League (IPL) world championship in the multi-ply bench press competition Dec. 3 at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas. He has won two world championships in two weight classes (165, 181 pounds), and is also a three-time California state champion.

Edward Dudley-Robey of Bakersfield won the International Powerlifting League (IPL) world championship in the multi-ply bench press competition Dec. 3 at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas. The IPL world championships included competitors ranging from Canada to Nigeria. Dudley-Robey started the day with a good opening lift of 424.2lbs (192.5 kilograms), but missed two world record attempts at 525 pounds (238.6 kg).

Dudley-Robey not only has won two world championships in two weight classes (165, 181 pounds), but is also a three-time California state champion, a five-time member of Team USA, and a 25-time record holder in the bench press with state, national and international records to his credit.

MARTIAL ARTS

Seventeen students from the Japan Martial Arts Academy of Bakersfield competed in the Order of the Dragon tournament Saturday. The students placed as follows: Grant McMahon, first in Kata (forms) and Weapons Kata; Sam Cole, first int Kata and Weapons Kata, second in Kumite (sparring) and was awarded the tournament Grand Champion; Asher Klock, first in Kata and Weapons Kata, fourth in Kumite; Vincent Cardenas, second in Kata, first in Kumite; Tristen Bradex first in Kata and Kumite, and was awarded the tournament Junior Grand Champion; Ivanna Lopez third in Kata, first in Kumite; Sandra Ryan second in Kata and Weapons Kata; Danny Villanueva third in Kumite; Arianna Salas third in Kata, first in Kumite; Liam Beckett first in Kumite; Galen Beckett second in Kumite; Sydney Jue third in Kata; Kai Cierley fourth in Kumite. BASEBALL

The Bakersfield Sliders 10U won the 11U division in the Sliders Winter Showdown on Sunday, defeating the Bakersfield Nitro 15-5 in the championship game. The roster includes: Elijah Flores, Nicolas Medina, Joshua Witcher, Jesse Benitez, Cesar Delgado, Mason Baird, Trent Spainhoward, Miguel Castillo, Nick Phair, and David Villegas, and is coached by David Villegas, Travis Spainhoward and Cesar Delgado.

 

The Bakersfield Heat 9U baseball team won the Bakersfield Sliders Winter Showdown on Sunday at the Northwest Baseball complex. The Heat was 4-0 for the weekend, defeating the Clovis Bears in the championship.

 

The Bakersfield Bombers 8U baseball team won the 2-day Bakersfield Sliders Winter Showdown at the Northwest Baseball Complex on Sunday. The Bombers beat the Tulare Express 1-0 in the championship, capping a 4-0 tournament, outscoring their opponents 21-3. The Bakersfield Bombers 12U baseball team won the 2-day Sliders Winter Showdown on Sunday. The team went 5-0, defeating the Bakersfield Grizzlies and Kern Krushers twice, before shutting out the Santa Ynez Titans 6-0 in the championship game. The team outscored its oppontents 54-7. The roster includes: Anthony Baldridge, Elijah Brum, Daniel Garcia, Alex Garza, Andres Garza, Andru Marion, Nathan Ortiz, Ryan Reese, R.J. Senining, Jalen Smith and Jared Toothman. Coaches are Henry Brum, Mike Garza, Kodi Marion and Jimmy Garcia.

SOCCER

The McFarland 19U Rhinos boys soccer team finished 20-0 this season, winning the Section Championship 1-0 over Castaic. Miguel Lastra scored the game-winning goal on an assist from Javier Gonzalez.

 

The Bakersfield Gunners 18U boys soccer team Gold Bracket won their third straight Coast Soccer League title, finishing 10-2-2.
