The 8th annual Annie Schierlitz Memorial Adult-Junior Doubles Tournament is now in the books and had a first this year!
Youth bowler, Andrew Svoren, not only was part of the Champion team with partner, Tim Henson, but then, by the luck of a draw, he was paired with partners that won him second with Joe “JP” Smith and third with partner, Mike Mayo!! Svoren was on a roll, literally, as he bowled a 707 scratch in the first squad with partners Henson and Smith. Then in the second squad, his partner, Mayo, rolled a 707 to carry Svoren’s 627 for a third place win!
Several new things were in the mix for this year’s event. Special thanks, and new for this year, to sponsors that came on board: Rodriguez & Associates, Keleher’s Certified Shorthand Reporters/Jean Watanabe, Corvettes of Bakersfield; and, GASSCO/Gary Davis. And, the event’s past sponsor, Kern Trophies, who has been with this event since its inception. Trophies for this year’s event were donated by Sheilah & Scott Bomar. And, another new thing for this year’s event, local bowler Don Williams donated eight bowling balls from his arsenal to be used as ball giveaways to the youth bowling in this event. Several of these balls were won by youth bowlers from Taft’s new West Side Lanes and were so appreciated by the youth that won them.
A couple of other new twists were also added to this year’s event, thanks to Tournament Committee member, Don Snow. To add to the “fun” factor, Snow arranged to have the two Condor Hockey Mascots — “Colonel Claw’d” and “Cal”, make an appearance and the whole center lit up when these two walked in! Not only did they bring cheer to the youth bowlers but they also zoned in on the adults too to bring a whole new perspective to making this event stand for fun! If that wasn’t enough, Snow went even further for this year’s event to add a “wow” factor and took the time the Friday before the event to drive down to Fountain Valley where they were hosting a PBA tournament and met with several PBA players and got autographed tour jerseys as well as autographed bowling balls and posters to add to this event’s raffle!
An event like this does not happen because of the work of a few. It takes a committee of many to pull it off and thanks to all those that took time to come and help make the event the success it was: Sheilah Bomar — Tournament Director, Don Snow, Tammy Waddle—Raffle, Russ Tweedy, Gary Cole, Tammy Sibley, Veronica Davis, Janet Cook, Arlene Chuman, Carol Armstrong, and Sherri Carter.

BOWLING TECH: BOWLING BALL MAINTENANCE 101
Just when everyone thought all the different sand paper and polish compound combos had been explored, guess again! Not only are there at least a half dozen or more different ways to directionally finish your bowling ball’s surface, but how about the different amounts of grip from the ball’s shell that contacts the lane?
Not only are there cleaners that change the friction factor, but Ebonite International has recently released a new product called “Power House”/ (Adrenaline) (Ball Steroid Wipes) to enhance the ball’s ability to grip the lane like it was a brand new ball even after hundreds of games!!
As a reactive bowling ball collects and absorbs lane oil into its shell, it eventually loses its ability to absorb any more, at least until the new Ebonite Ball Steroid Wipes hit the market. Now that new favorite ball might last hundreds of more games than expected while maintaining that new ball grip up until it either wears out the track of the ball or gets destroyed by a hungry pin-spotter!
TEAM LIFE/MARGE’S BOWL-A-THON RAISES MONEY FOR UPCOMING RELAY FOR LIFE
Tournament coordinator, John Burnite, would like to thank all that came out to participate in the 2012 Team Life/Marge’s Bowl-A-Thon held on January 14 at Regency Lanes. Thirty-eight bowlers came out to support this cause, some were local league bowlers and some were not.
This event is put on annually to raise funds for the “Team Life/Marge” team that participates each year in the local Relay for Life event. The “Team Life/Marge” team consists of 47 members and they will be ready to go May 5-6.
