Bakersfield trio provides punch for Cal Poly SLO

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo will close out its baseball season this week having benefited from solid performances this season by three players with Bakersfield ties.

Centennial High graduate Brent Morel has started all 53 games at third base and leads the Mustangs with a .364 batting average. He has team highs of 82 hits, five triples, 56 RBIs, 131 total bases and a .364 batting average.

He had a 17-game hitting streak this season.

Liberty graduate Luke Yoder, who has started 45 games as a designated hitter/outfielder, takes a .350 batting average into the final week of the season. He has eight homers, 13 doubles, 32 RBIs and has stolen 11 bases in 13 tries. He missed seven games with a broken big toe, but batted .412 in 19 Big West games.

Another Liberty High graduate, pitcher Jared Eskew, has a 5-3 record and 3.66 earned run average. In 64 innings, Eskew, who transferred to SLO from Point Loma, has struck out 44 and walked 20. He earned a win May 10 against No. 12 Cal State Fullerton.

The Mustangs (23-30 overall, 7-14 Big West Conference) wind up their season with a weekend series at UC Riverside.
