Pirates pitcher Phil Dumatrait throws against the Giants in the first inning Wednesday in Pittsburgh.

The Ridgeview High and Bakersfield College product struck out five, walked one and allowed five hits before leaving with a runner on second and two outs in the sixth. Dumatrait has given up one run over 92⁄3 innings in two starts since replacing the released Matt Morris in the Pirates’ rotation.

Pittsburgh claimed Dumatrait on waivers after he was 0-4 with a 15.00 ERA in six starts with Cincinnati last season.

“It’s unbelievable,” Dumatrait said. “As long as I live, I’ll never forget this moment. After I was drafted, the goal was to get to the major leagues and I accomplished that. Then it was about getting the first win, and now I hope it’s the first of many.”

Dumatrait (1-1) won eight years after being the Red Sox’s first-round draft pick in 2000.

“I thought he was great,” manager John Russell said.

Xavier Nady hit a two-run homer to spoil Barry Zito’s return to the Giants rotation.

Zito (0-7) went five innings, allowing three hits, two runs, two walks and five strikeouts, easily his best outing of the season. He was moved into the bullpen after that but never pitched in relief. — Staff and wire reports
