Rudy Burgess, a wide receiver from Arizona State who was the 2002 Bakersfield Californian All-Area Player of the Year his senior year at Desert High School, has signed a contract with the Indianapolis Colts as a non-drafted free agent.
Burgess, who is listed at 5-foot-10 and 188 pounds, was a versatile player for the Sun Devils. Although labeled as a wide receiver, he also played tailback, cornerback and was a kickoff and punt returner. He even threw a 43-yard touchdown pass his sophomore season.
Burgess became only the fourth player in Pac-10 history (and the first from ASU) to conclude his career with more than 1,000 rushing, receiving and return yards.
Burgess, 23, graduated from Desert High in 2003. He was the 2002 Southern Section Division XII Defensive Player of the Year.
In addition to football, Burgess was a track standout for the Scorpions. He placed fourth in the state meet long jump and holds the Southern Section Division XII record in the event with a 24-8.
