JC roundup: BC set to host WSC wrestling championships

Bakersfield College will host the Western State Conference Wrestling Championships today, starting at 11 a.m. Admission is free.

BC is ranked No. 7 in the latest state poll compiled by the California Community College Wrestling Coaches Association.

Also competing today will be West Hills, Cuesta and Rio Hondo. Rio Hondo is ranked No. 12, Cuesta is No. 15 and West Hills is not ranked. BC has beaten Cuesta and West Hills in duals this season but hasn't faced Rio Hondo.

The format is a round-robin dual meet event, with three duals going at one time. Times for the duals are 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

BC has six ranked wrestlers, including top-ranked A.J. Smith (174 pounds) and Brad Carls (197). But BC coach Bill Kalivas said Smith (ankle) and Carls (leg) are injured and may not compete today.

Other ranked wrestlers from BC are Vince Rivera, No. 8 at 133; Bryce Horton, No. 8 at 157; Alvaro Zemeno, No. 6 at 165; and Zeth Weldon, No. 5 at 184.

JC WOMEN'S SOCCER

Terryn Soelberg scored three first-half goals as the Bakersfield College women's soccer team beat Citrus 4-1 in Glendora. The Renegades (9-7-2, 7-3-2 Western State Conference South Division) also got a first-half goal from Amber Beckham, who opened the scoring in the 11th minute. BC led 4-0 at halftime.

JC VOLLEYBALL

Reisa Fessler had 14 kills and 10 digs, and Brookey Holmes had 12 kills and 14 digs as Bakersfield College swept Citrus 26-24, 25-15, 25-17 in Glendora. Chelsea Rose added 34 assists for the Renegades (16-4, 9-0 WSC).
