Fresno Pacific is the only non-NCAA Division I school the CSUB volleyball team will face in 2009. It likely is also the best.
The Roadrunners nearly picked up a signature win for the season against the Sunbirds Tuesday night, before FPU pulled out a thrilling 19-25, 29-31, 25-22, 25-16, 15-4 win at Icardo Center.
The win was the 56th consecutive regular season victory for the two-time defending NAIA champions (21-0), who used their superior size and experience to rally after being three points from being swept.
Lindy DeGeare had 18 kills for CSUB. Lindsay Toone added 12 kills and Alysia Baker 11 for the Roadrunners. Setter Barbie Unfried chipped in 47 assists. Senior libero Kayla Williamson posted 27 digs.
Slovakian star and Mississippi State transfer Martina Gregusova led the Sunbirds with 16 kills. Michelle Johnson, a Bakersfield Christian High graduate, added 15 kills and seven blocks.

Breast cancer awareness
Cal State Bakersfield's women's soccer team will wear pink jerseys in Friday's 7 p.m. home match against Seattle in support of breast cancer awareness. Tickets are $3 at the gate for anyone wearing any article of pink clothing. Regular prices are $6 for adults and $4 for children. The first 200 in attendance will receive a special pink wristband.
The pink game jerseys will also be auctioned after the game. Bidding begins at $50 and there's an option to buy-it-now for $250. Proceeds will go to Links for Life, a local organization that supports breast cancer screening for women under 40 and provides support for women getting treatment.
