BC Football vs. Allan Hancock # 15 Darius Tubbs bobbles the ball after it was tipped by a Allan Hancock opponent. After gaining control, Tubbs takes it in for a touch down.
With 53 seconds left, Bakersfield College freshman wideout Aaron Morris caught a potential 31-yard pass that would have been a game-tying touchdown.
But he was ruled out of bounds. Moments later, BC quaterback Brian Duboski threw an interception, and Allan Hancock survived the scare to post a 35-28 win Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.
Hancock, two weeks after squandering a big lead in a loss to Fullerton, scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns to come from behind.
Both teams had to withstand a 33-minute delay early in the third quarter when the stadium's four banks of lights on the north side of the field went out.
It was the second straight loss for BC, which falls to 3-3 in its National Conference Northern Division opener. Hancock is 5-1 overall.
The game was won by the Hancock offensive line, which opened nice holes for running backs Cameron Artis-Payne and Andy Bridge. The Bulldogs sustained lengthy drives most of the game and consistently had sizeable gains on first-down running attempts. Payne finished with 192 rushing yards and Bridge had 92.
Hancock had 441 yards in 81 plays of total offense. BC had 402 yards inj 62 plays.
The Renegades managed to hold the Hancock offense on the Bulldogs' final possession, but BC had to use all of its time outs. After turning the ball over on downs, BC neededto drive 65 yards and had only 1:22 left on the clock.
Hancock took a 35-28 lead with 3:07 left in the game when quarterback T.J. Jordan completed a 17-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Rogers, who went to his knees in the end zone to complete the catch. Jordan was under heavy pressure and managed to find Rogers while throwing on the run.
BC freshman wide receiver Darius Tubbs had touchdown catches of 42 yards in the second quarter and 20 yards with six minutes left in the fourth quarter for BC. The fourth-quarter came one play after Tubbs dropped an option pass from freshman wide receiver Aaron Morris that would have been a 20-yartd TD play. Tyler Schleicher's PAT tied it 28-28.
Hancock running back Cameron Artis-Payne had two fourth-quarter touchdowns to rally the Bulldogs from a 21-14 deficit entering the fourth quarter. They covered 18 and 23 yards and both capped lengthy drives that were controlled by the Hancock offensive line.
When Payne scored on his 23-yard run, he ran over several potential tacklers inside the 5-yard line. There was 8:51 left in the game when Payne scored.
BC had a special teams touchdown in the third quarter when Taiyon Jackson ran a reverse out of punt formation and went 47 yards for a touchdown. That broke a 14-14 tie.
Hancock pulled even with 45 seconds left in the first half on a spectacular leaping catch in the end zone by wide receiver Shane Henderson, who out-jumped BC cornerback Mercy Maston on the 40-yard scoring catch.
Maston argued that Henderson pushed off, and BC coach Jeff Chudy chimed in his objections to the play, but the play stood.
The Renegades used two big pass plays on their scoring drives.Wide receiver Darius Tubbs scored the first points of the game with 12:20 left in the second quarter when he hauled in a long pass from quarterback Brian Duboski about the 10-yard line -- he bobbled it for a moment as the Hancock defender missed an attempt to knock the ball away -- and jogged into the end zone.
Hancock responded with a 17-play, 73-yard drive, capped by a 2-yard TD run by Payne. The Bulldogs got a huge break on a fourth-and-12 incomplete pass from the BC 35 when defensive tackle Tevin Jackson was called for roughing the passer, which gave Hancock a first down at the 20.
BC came back to take a 14-7 lead when Duboski completed a 38-yard pass to tight end Emmanuel Ossai, who appeared to edge into the end zone but was ruled inches short. Duboski's keeper on the next play made the touchdown official with 2:40 left in the half.
Hancock took over on its 34. At that time, Hancock quarterback Jordan had only thrown for six yards on 2-of-9 passing. But he completed four of his next six attempts, capped by the Henderson catch. Jordan even withstood an intentional grounding penalty during that stretch.
Payne had 62 yards in the first half. He entered the game ranked among the state leaders with 564 yards. His TD run was his 10th of the season.
