JC roundup: BC men run past Pasadena City at Ventura tourney

VENTURA -- Nick Markovich scored 19 points, including four 3-pointers, as the Bakersfield College men's basketball team opened its season with a 100-75 victory over Pasadena City College at the Ventura Tournament.

Chase Adams scored 15 points, and Bobby Fisher and Syler Vaden each had 12 points for the Renegades (1-0), who led 59-32 at halftime. Stevie Howard had 10 rebounds and six assists. BC will face Ventura or Orange Coast in the tournament semifinals at 7 p.m. today.

BC women win opener, 77-64

Alexi Smith had 24 points, 17 rebounds, four blocks and to lead the Bakersfield College women's basketball team past Allan Hancock in its season opener.

Ashlee Taira added 20 points, making all 10 of her free throws, and Kaileigh Christensen added 15 points for BC, which made 27 of their 32 free throws.

Sister act lifts BC soccer

Terryn Soelberg scored what proved to be the game-winning goal on a breakway in the 82nd minute, with an assist from her sister Torree Soelberg, to help the Bakersfield College women's soccer team defeat College of the Canyons 2-1 at BC.

The victory secured a third-place finish in the Western State Conference's Southern Division for the Renegades (11-7-2, 9-3-2 WSC).

Katie Hall gave Canyons a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 18th minute.

BC's Morgan Hagen scored unassisted in the 70th minute to tie it 1-1.

Terryn Soelberg added the game-winner on a breakway in the 82nd minute, with an assist from her sister Torree Soelberg.

Pierce tops BC in volleyball

WOODLAND HILLS -- Seven-time defending Western State Conference South Division champion Los Angeles Pierce avenged an earlier loss to first-place BC with a 25-21, 25-19, 25-20 victory.

It was the first WSC loss of the season for BC (16-5, 9-1 WSC).

Brookey Holmes led BC with 9 kills and 14 digs, and Reisa Fessler added 8 kills and 14 digs.

Taft tops Reedley in volleyball

REEDLEY -- Tracy Lewis and Courtney Dickerson had 15 kills apiece to lead the Taft College women's volleyball team past Reedley, 22-25, 25-15, 25-13, 25-20, in a Central Valley Conference match. Taft (13-10) is 8-5 in the CVC.

Morgan Blair added 11 kills and 16 digs, Lewis added four blocks, and Dickerson had three blocks for Taft (13-10, 8-5 CVC), which plays its final regular season match Wednesday at Porterville.

Taft women lose in basketball

TAFT -- Christine Taylor scored 13 points for Taft College in a 79-51 home loss to L.A. Southwest College. Theresa Henderson added eight points and Baylee Day had six rebounds for the Cougars (1-4).
