Local report: Northridge to honor Arvin grad Craven

Terry Craven, who graduated from Arvin High School in 1961 and Bakersfield College in 1963 before becoming a standout baseball player at San Fernando Valley State College (now known as Cal State Northridge), has been voted into the Cal State Northridge Hall of Fame.

He will be inducted as part of the class of 2010 next Feb. 21.

Craven was the Matadors' first baseball All-American when he played his only season for the school in 1965. He led the team in batting, RBIs and his 12 home runs led the nation.

Craven was a baseball assistant coach for 14 seasons, starting in the fall of 1970, and was the head baseball coach from 1985-88. He also served as a football assistant coach for five seasons.

CSUB VOLLEYBALL

Lindy DeGeare had 12 kills, but Cal State Bakersfield was swept by St. Mary's 25-15, 25-19, 25-21 on Friday in Moraga.

Barbie Unfried finished with 19 assists and Kayla Williamson recorded 18 digs for the Roadrunners (7-9). Lindsay Toone added 10 digs.

The 'Runners have lost four straight matches and five of their last six.

Lauren Corp led the Gaels (8-3) with 17 kills. Chanteal Satele added 15. Kapua Kamana'o recorded 22 assists and Missy White had 13. Corp and Kamana'o had 13 and 11 digs, respectively. Alita Fisher had 12.

CSUB plays at University of San Francisco at 3 p.m. today.

JC VOLLEYBALL

Reisa Fessler and Laporsha Singh tallied 12 kills each as Bakersfield College swept Allan Hancock 25-14, 25-21, 25-14. Brookey Holmes added eight kills for the Renegades (7-3), who will host Santa Barbara next Friday.

JC CROSS COUNTRY

The Bakersfield College men and women placed 11th and 16th, respectively, out of 23 schools at the Golden West Invitational in Huntington Beach. Emnet Habebo was the top finisher for the women, with a time of 22 minutes, 55 seconds. Francisco Mejia was the top finisher for the men in 21:25.
