HANFORD -- Sacramento City College had a strong second day to overcome first-day leader Bakersfield College and win the California Community College women's golf championship Tuesday.
Sacramento had an eight-stroke improvement from its first round Monday at the par-73, 5,976-yard Kings Country Club.
Sacramento had rounds of 338 and 330 for a 668 score, five strokes better than BC.
Having to settle for second place, the Renegades had a 344 on Tuesday after leading the tournament with a 329 first-round score Monday, eight shots better than Sacramento.
"It was ours to win. We just didn't get it done," said BC coach Larry Cook. "The girls tried their hardest. That's all we could ask for."
This was the first time BC had qualified for the state tournament since the program started in 2001, Cook said. BC's previous best finish was third in the Southern California regionals in 2002.
BC's top scorer was Katherine James, who followed up her 82 on Monday with a 6-over-par 79 on Tuesday, giving her a 15-over 161. She was sixth in the individual rankings to earn a first-team All-State berth.
Ellen Krause, who had a 76 on Monday, shot 87 Tuesday and was BC's next-best finisher with a 17-over 163. She tied for seventh as an individual.
BC's other results were an 84-87--171 by Stacie Netzer, an 87-91--178 by Dee Ray and a 98-96--194 by Vivian Davis.
The individual winner was Sierra College's Lynne Cowan, who had rounds of 77 and 75 for a 6-over-par 152. The 75 was the low round of the day on Tuesday.
Palomar placed third with a 682 team score and Cañada College was fourth with a 714.
Cook said it was more challenging Tuesday because the fairways were softer and the greens quicker.
"If you missed a shot, it cost you," Cook said.
There was also a delay in the start of play Tuesday because of frost, Cook said.
