Local report: Cockerel leads BC to WSC victory

Jausecca Cockerel had 14 points, 14 rebounds, six assists and six steals to lead Bakersfield College to a 76-58 victory Saturday over Glendale at the Gil Bishop Sports Center.

Madison Tarver also had a big game for the Renegades (9-5, 2-0 Western State Conference), finishing with 12 points, 10 rebounds and six steals.

Emily Parks added nine steals for Bakersfield, which hosts College of the Canyons on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

JC men's basketball

Gerald Bates scored 12 points and Antonio Johnson finished with 10, but Bakersfield College lost to Glendale 61-58.

The Renegades had a chance to tie the game with just over a second left, but a possible game-tying 3-pointer came up short.

Bakersfield (6-11, 0-2 Western State Conference) will host College of the Canyons on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Hall tickets

Tickets for the annual Bob Elias Kern County Sports Hall of Fame induction banquet are on sale at Raymond's Trophies, 300 Chester Ave., and at the Rabobank Arena box office.

Only a limited number of tickets are available for the banquet, which will be held Wednesday, Feb. 1, at the Marriott Hotel on Truxtun Avenue. Tickets are $40 apiece.

The inductees this year are NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick, Olympic silver medalist swimmer Gabe Woodward, former Bakersrfield High School standout athlete Pat Skable and the late Arnold Kirschenmann, one of the greatest golfers Bakersfield has produced.

NBA D-League

Portland Trail Blazers assignee Luke Babbitt made 13-of-23 shots and finished with 35 points, 11 rebounds and six assists as the Idaho Stampede beat the Bakersfield Jam 114-104 at the Jam Events Center.

Paul Carter added 16 points and Denver Nuggets assignee Julyan Stone had five points, 11 assists and five rebounds in his first start at point guard.

The Stampede held the Jam to just 3-of-15 shooting from behind the 3-point line.

Renaldo Major had 23 points (15-of-19 free throws) and nine rebounds and Solomon Alabi had 22 points, nine rebounds and four blocks to lead Bakersfield.
