Lyle Negron got to use the 2009 season as a learning experience as a college quarterback.
The sophomore from Murrieta Valley High School in Southern California backed up Logan Kilgore during BC's 10-2 season.
On Saturday night, Negron will open this season as the Renegades' starting quarterback when BC plays host to Los Angeles Pierce College.
Negron got the call over Byron Campbell, a redshirt freshman from Liberty High School who was recruited to Montana State but suffered a injury there before returning to Bakersfield.
BC offensive coordinator Carl Dean said he expects Campbell to take some snaps against Pierce.
"We want to give him some reps so he can see the speed of the game," Dean said. "How we use him will depend on the game situation."
But Negron will be the primary quarterback.
Last season in limited action, Negron was 6-of-15 for 97 yards and a TD. He also ran for 81 yards on 21 carries.
As a senior at Murrieta High School in 2008, he was 175-of-267 for 1,965 yards and 12 touchdowns, and he ran for 852 yards and 16 TDs.
"We are not looking for him to run for 16 touchdowns here," Dean said. "He does give us more mobility. When things break down, he'll be able to something out of nothing."
The year as Kilgore's understudy was beneficial, Dean said.
"He does have a better grasp of what we're doing," Dean said.
"I learned a lot from Kilgore," Negron said after Saturday afternoon's practice. "He's more of a pocket guy."
Kilgore, who's now at Middle Tennessee State, became only the third quarterback in BC's history to surpass 2,000 passing yards last season, finishing with 2,512 yards and 22 touchdowns.
"Byron has been so close," Negron said of the competition for the starting job. "Last year, Logan pretty much had it wrapped up early. Byron's pretty good."
BC's various position coaches have determined their starters, and the players who will be rotated into games for extensive playing time. They identified 32 players, 16 on offense, 13 on defense and three on special teams.
Of those, 20 are freshmen. The only returning starters are offensive lineman Mario Abundes and linebacker Tierney Yates.
Running back Andre Smith, who is healthy and listed as a starter, was the starter in last season's opener but suffered a season-ending ankle injury in that game. Safety Tyler Thompson also played extensively last season but didn't start.
"The year we played San Francisco for the state championship (in 2000) we started nine freshmen on defense," BC head coach Jeff Chudy said. "In 2007, when we went 11-2, it was about the same thing.
"The learning curve is pretty high. We're throwing a lot at them."
But the inexperience means more mistakes.
"It's a work in progress," Chudy said.
