Local colleges: BC sweeps past Canyons in volleyball

Bakersfield College opened its Western State Conference volleyball season by downing College of the Canyons, 25-17, 25-19, 26-28, 25-23 in Santa Clarita.
BC (8-4 overall) is ranked No. 17 in the state and Canyons is ranked No. 16. Canyons beat BC earlier this year in the San Diego Mesa Tournament.
Reisa Fessler had 25 kills and 14 digs to lead the way for BC. Brookey Holmes added 16 kills and 13 digs and Chelsea Rose added 51 set assists.
BC plays host to West L.A. on Friday.
CSUB MEN'S GOLF
The Cal State Bakersfield men's golf team placed fifth at the Firestone Grill College Invitational that concluded at the Monarch Dunes Golf Course in Nipomo.
Levi Garcia was CSUB's top finisher. His 1-over-par 72 on Tuesday gave him a 5-over 218 and a tie for 13th place.
James Moseley shot the team's low round of the tournament Tuesday, a 1-under 70 that included an eagle. He tied for 22nd with a 9-over 232. Kyle Morrison tied for 18th (220).
Daniel Petta had a 74 on Tuesday and placed 29th with a 12-over 225. Matt Hammons shot a 75 and finished with a 32-over 245 for 45th place.
CSUB WOMEN'S GOLF
One day after shooting her collegiate best 77, Cal State Bakersfield women's golfer Jennifer Davison shot a 76 to help CSUB place sixth at the Firestone Grill College Invitational at the Monarch Dunes Golf Course in Nipomo.
CSUB finished with a 969 team score. Cal State Northridge and tourney host Cal Poly tied for first with 917s.
Davison shot 238 to place 15th among 56 players. CSUB's Ashley Neal shot 80 Tuesday and had a 241 to finish 19th.
Other Tuesday scores for CSUB were an 82 by Jenny Barnett, an 83 by Dana Arneson and an 86 by Meggan Bellows. Barnett placed 23rd (245), Arneson was 31st (247) and Bellows placed 47th (256).
CSUB BARBECUE THURSDAY
The 31st annual Cal State Bakersfield fall athletic barbecue will be held Thursday in the Icardo Center.
A New York steak or teriyaki chicken will be served from 5:30 p.m.-9 p.m. Proceeds benefit the CSUB athletic scholarship fund.
Tickets are $25 when purchased in advance or $30 at the door. CSUB student tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door.
Tickets can be purchased on line at www.gorunners.com, and at Bakersfield area Vons, FoodMaxx, Wells Fargo Bank offices, both Mexicali restaurant locations, Russo's at The Marketplace and at the CSUB athletic department.
The event also includes a 50-50 drawing, prize drawings every half-hour and a costume contest with the winner winning a three-day, two-night stay in Las Vegas.
BC WOMEN'S SOCCER
Terryn Soelberg had two goals and an assist to lead the Bakersfield College women's soccer team past Los Angeles Mission College 4-0 in Sylmar.
Amber Beckham and Brittany Hunt also had goals for BC (4-4-1 overall, 2-0-1 Western State Conference South).
BC goalkeeper Taryn Wilson had one save as the Renegade defense prevented many serious scoring chances by Mission.
BC plays at L.A. Valley on Friday.
