Local report: CSUB women come up short in 54-52 loss to Northridge

NORTHRIDGE — Cal State Northridge held off a late chance by CSUB to post a 54-52 women’s basketball win.
CSUB’s Amber Williams had a chance to tie it with 10 seconds left but missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw situation. A foul and missed free throw by the Matadors gave CSUB a chance to win it, but Lauren Carter’s 3-point attempt at the buzzer was short.
Williams led CSUB (4-18) with 17 points and Carter had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Northridge (12-9) had a 58-31 rebounding advantage.
CSUB water polo
SANTA BARBARA — The Roadrunners opened their water polo season by splitting two matches at UC Santa Barbara.
No. 19 Cal State Northridge beat CSUB 10-4 in the first match before the ’Runners downed Santa Clara 10-9.
Jessica Browning had two goals against Northridge and four goals against Santa Clara, including the game-winner in the fourth quarter.
Taylor Hanson, Janelle Shelby and Sam Shead added two goals each vs. Santa Clara. Jessica Browning, Shannon McKenzie and Paige Tsuruda had one goal each vs. Northridge.
Mixed martial arts
EDMONTON, Ontario — Former CSUB wrestler and current assistant coach Brian Cobb dropped a unanimous decision to Antonio McKee on Friday as part of the Maximum Fighting Championships mixed martial arts card.
The three judges each scored the bout 29-28 for McKee.
It was scheduled to be an MFC lightweight title bout, but McKee missed making weight by 7 pounds.
McKee improved to 27-4-2 while Cobb, ranked No. 11 in the world by Fight Matrix, fell to 19-7.
CSUB swimming
Evan Vizcarra won three events and Chris Pipes added two first-place finishes to lead ’Runners men’s team to a 174-111 victory over Cal Baptist at the Hillman Aquatics Center.
Vizcarra took first place in the 500-yard freestyle (4 minutes, 40.39 seconds), the 1,000 free (9:32.78) and 200 butterfly (1:55.57).
Pipes placed first in the 50 free (20.90) and 100 free (45.94). Pipes was also on CSUB's winning 400 medley relay squad that posted a 3:26.76 with Peter Bardessono, Brian Martinez and Dan Wickensheimer.
Rachel McCall won three events and Isabell Nystrom won two, but the CSUB women were edged by Cal Baptist 155-138 and fell to Loyola Marymount 156-124.
McCall won the 200-yard free (1:51.73), 100 breaststroke (1:06.33) and 200 breaststroke (2:23.87).
Nystrom won the 500 free (5:04.93) and 1,000 free (10:32.37). McCall and Nystrom also teamed with Lily Donohue and Louise Westergren to win the 400 medley relay (3:57.13).
Jordan Reed swept the diving events for CSUB.
BC softball
FULLERTON — Kara Frankhouser homered twice and drove in seven runs as the Renegades split a doubleheader with host Fullerton College.
Frankhouser, who has homered in all three BC games this season, went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a home run in the opener, a 13-10 victory, and then hit a 3-run homer in the seventh of a 4-3 loss.
Kaitlin Toerner, Julie Estep and Kaila Williams also had three hits in the opening game for the ’Gades (1-2).
BC women’s basketball
Brittany Smith had 30 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Renegades to a 79-66 victory over Santa Monica at the Gil Bishop Sports Center.
Gabi Morales added 16 points for BC (12-7, 5-2 Western State Conference), but left early in the second half with an ankle injury.
Andrea Harris had 13 points and 14 rebounds, and Jausecca Cockerel finished with 11 points, five assists, eight rebounds and five steals. Cockerel went 5-for-6 from the free-throw line despite losing a contact lens.
BC men’s basketball
Conroy Lester led the ’Gades with 18 points and Duncan Schramm added 13 in a 69-63 loss to Santa Monica.
After trailing 39-22 at the half, Bakersfield (8-14, 2-5 Western State Conference) pulled to within four points with around six minutes left.
