College roundup: James, BC golf team 2nd after opening round

CHINO HILLS -- Katherine James shot 6-over 78 to help the Bakersfield College women's golf team finish the first round of the Southern California Regionals in second place Monday.

James is second, six shots behind Beth Sellers of Palomar, who shot 72. Palomar (319) leads BC (330) by 11 shots entering today's final round.

The Renegades hold a narrow advantage over Santiago Canyon (332) and Santa Barbara City (338). The top two teams and top 12 individuals advance to next week's state championship in Hanford.

Dee Ray (81), Ellen Krausse (84), Stacie Netzer (87) and Vivian Davis (92) were BC's other finishers.

BC FOOTBALL

Bakersfield College is organizing a rooter bus for Saturday's game at College of the Canyons. The bus will leave from the administration parking lot at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The cost is $25. Fans should bring their own food. Call Sally Hill at 322-3175 or Becki Whitson at 395-4619.

BC is 8-1 overall and 5-0 in the Northern National Conference. BC can win the outright NCC title an ensure a first-round playoff home game at the Golden Empire Bowl with a win. Canyons is 6-3 (3-2 NNC).

CSUB VOLLEYBALL

CSUB senior libero Kayla Williamson earned NCAA Division I Volleyball Independent Defensive Player of the Week honors for the week ending Nov. 8. It marks the fifth time that Williamson has been named Independent Player of the Week.

Williamson posted 49 digs in two matches last week.
