Local report: Shah takes lead in prestigious Jones Cup with 1-under 71

SEA ISLAND, Ga. -- Centennial High School graduate Manav Shah shot his second straight 1-under-par 71 on Saturday to take the lead at the Jones Cup Invitational.

Shah, who played last spring at the University of San Diego and has transferred to UCLA, where he is redshirting this season, has a 3-stroke lead over Curtis Thompson of Coral Springs, Fla., the first-day leader who shot 75 on Saturday.

Shah, with a two-day score of 2-under-par 142, is the only golfer with under-par rounds in both days of the tournament. The final round is today at the Ocean Forest Golf Club.

The Jones Cup Invitational is considered one of the top amateur tournaments in the nation.

Wrestling: CSUB shines at Cal Collegiate Open

CSUB Bakersfield's Tyler Iwamura won the 125-pound title at the 36th annual California Collegiate Open, hosted by San Francisco State.

Iwamura went 3-0 Saturday, defeating the No. 2 seed, Cal Baptist's Jaime Martinez, 2-0, in the final. Iwamura leads the Roadrunners in victories with 19.

Frank Lomas (133) and Dalton Kelley each posted second- place finishes for CSUB. Lomas lost to Boise State's Brian Owen 6-3 in the final. Kelley (141) lost in his final to Cal Baptist's Bradford Gerl. Other top CSUB finishers were Adam Fierro (165, 3rd) Anthony Box (157, 4th) and Jesus Ambriz (174, fourth).

CSUB red-shirt Bryce Hammond (174) won the 174-pound title, beating Oregon State's John Tuck 7-5 in the finals.

CSUB wins, then loses in women's water polo

RIVERSIDE -- CSU Bakersfield split two water polo matches at the Cal Baptist Mini Lancer Invitational, beating Cal Baptist 9-8 and losing 14-7 to No. 6-ranked Arizona State.

Taylor Hanson had three goals vs. Cal Baptist and Megan Pezzolla had 10 saves. CSUB (2-4) withstood a Cal Baptist power play in the final 19 seconds. Shannon McKenzie added two goals for CSUB.

Arizona State beat CSUB for the second time this season. Janelle Shelby and Paige Tsuruda had two goals each for the Roadrunners Pezzolla had seven saves.

Track and field: Roadrunner men go 1-2-3 in mile

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- More than a dozen personal-best times were set, along with 20 season-best marks as CSUB had its best indoor track meet thus far this season at the Northern Arizona University (indoor) Open.

The distance runners led the way. Rudy Castro, Derek Stotle and Miguel Gonzalez went 1-2-3 in the men's mile with times of 5:04.54, 5:05.34 and 5:19.55, respectively.

Jazmin Lopez was second in the women's 3,000 meters (11:41.09) with Monica Guzman taking fifth (11:56.96).

Among athletes setting personal bests, Michael Davis had a 6.75 and Jordan Taylor had a 6.81 in the 60-meter prelims. Alyssa Page had a PR 7.77 in the women's 60 and Antionette Garrett had an indoor PR in the women's 400 (58.97). Sara Nielson had a PR in the 60 hurdles (9:20).

CSUB beaten by Cal State LA in women's tennis

Cal State Los Angeles handed CSU Bakersfield a 7-2 women's tennis loss at Stockdale Country Club, dropping the Roadrunners to 0-4.

CSUB's points game at No. 5 singles, when Julian Mannix beat Tiffany Leung, 2-6, 6-2 (10-5) and at No. 3 doubles when Mannix and Nancy Ramirez had an 8-5 win over Leung and Joyce Librando.

JC baseball: Renegades improve to 2-0

Freshman Brad Lindsley pitched six scoreless innings and struck out five, and Brent Peterson went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs to lead Bakersfield College to a 13-2 baseball victory over Irvine Valley College (1-1) at Gerry Collis Field. Isaiah Turner went 2-for-3 with a double, and Jordan Turner and Mike Spingola each had a two-run double for the Renegades (2-0).

JC softball: BC tops Fresno, Antelope Valley

Bakersfield College's Kaila Williams had three hits in an 8-5 victory over Antelope Valley, and then backed that up by pitching a two-hitter, and collecting two hits herself, in an 8-0 victory over Antelope Valley College.

Callie McRoberts also had 3 hits in the opener, and Kara Frankhouser and Sara Smith each had a homerun for BC.

In game 2 Williams pitched a complete game 2-hitter and went 2-3 at the plate to lead the Renegades to a 8-0 victory in 5 innings. Frankhouser added another homerun for Bakersfield.

The Renegades (3-2) will host Sierra College on Thursday.

JC baseball: Taft falls to Feather River, 7-6

TAFT -- Feather River College completed a season-opening three-game sweep over Taft College baseball with a 7-6 win in 10 innings.

Feather River scored six runs in the fifth, sending 12 to the plate. Four walks and a hit batter contributed.

Taft tied it in the eighth on a three-run rally. The game-tying run scored on Chase Skinner's suicide squeeze bunt.

Feather River's Kyle Ford scored the winning run after reaching base on a third strike wild pitch.

A two-out single, walk and single by Chadwick Kaalekahi scored him.

Forrest Smith and Skinner went 3-for-5 for Taft and Matt Packer went 2-for-4. Taft hosts Siskiyous at 1 p.m. Thursday.

JC track: BC athletes finish first in five events

LANCASTER -- The Bakersfield College men and women had five first-place finishes apiece at the Antelope Valley All-Comers Meet at Antelope Valley College.

For the men, Deshawn Meadows won the 400 meters in 52.06 seconds, Chris Schwartz won the 1,500 (4:09.64) and 3,000 (9:05.92), Shane O'Malley won the 400 hurdles (1:02.19) and the 4x100 relay team of Myren Moore, Justin Evans, Meadows and Triandous Hobson placed first in 3:28.60.

The BC women winners were Elizabeth Sanchez in the 800 (2:29.73), Amanda Smith in the shot (8.59 meters) and discus (87 feet, 8 inches) and Breann Goodmon in the hammer (123-9) and javelin (91-5).

JC basketball: Canyons sweeps BC men, women

Brittany Smith scored 16 of her team-high 22 points in the final 10 minutes, but Bakersfield College couldn't overcome poor shooting in an 89-67 loss to College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita.

BC (13-8, 6-3 Western State Conference) dropped into a first-place tie with the Cougars in the WSC South Division.

BC shot 27 percent compared to 44 percent for Canyons, which also converted 19 of 21 free-throw attempts. The 'Gades made just 9-of-24 free throws.

Madison Tarver added 12 and 17 rebounds, and Jausseca Cockerel had 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists for BC.

The Renegades will host L.A. Valley at 5 p.m. Wednesday for Coaches vs. Cancer Awareness Night.

BC will accept donations toward the cause and fans are encouraged to wear pink or purple.

BC's Conroy Lester had team highs of 22 points and 11 rebounds but the BC men's team was beaten 75-59 by host Canyons. The Renegades trailed 36-21 at half. BC (9-15, 3-6 Western State Conference) will host L.A. Valley Wednesday.
