Mount San Antonio College showed Bakersfield College why it's a state finalist the last three years, last year's state champion and ranked No. 1 in the nation this year.
The Mounties controlled both sides of the line of scrimmage and downed the Renegades 34-20 before 8,612 in Memorial Stadium.
"We had a chance when we got within 28-20 but we didn't get it done," said BC coach Jeff Chudy, whose Renegades fell to 4-1. "We had too many missed tackles and too many other mistakes."
Mount SAC (5-0) limited BC to 36 net rushing yards after entering the game by allowing minus-2 net yards in its first four games.
Mounties quarterback Nick Lamaison did a great job picking apart the Renegades' secondary, completing 22-of-38 passes for 398 yards and a touchdown.
Lamaison was only sacked once and the Mount SAC offensive line did a great job picking up the BC blitzes. Lamaison easily found his receivers when he had time to throw.
"We'd rush six, 6-and-a-half guys and they did a great job protecting," Chudy said.
BC even changed quarterbacks after starter Lyle Negron had trouble connecting with his receivers. Negron did have a TD pass -- a 55-yard screen to running back Julian Dean-Johnson, and Negron had a 30-yard run on BC's first play from scrimmage. But that was the highlight for BC's ground game.
Byron Campbell replaced Negron at quarterback and pulled BC within 28-20 on a 14-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Hobdy with 3:59 left in the third quarter. But the Mounties kept BC under control after that and extended their lead by hitting two fourth-quarter field goals, from 25 and 38 yards by Jeremy Brown.
Mount SAC jumped ahead 21-0 after two quick touchdowns early in the second quarter. Defensive back Malcom Murray picked off a deflected pass from Negron -- BC's first thrown interception of the season -- and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown.
On the Mounties' next possession, wide receiver Richard Parham got a step on BC defensive back Alfonso Jackson, caught a perfectly thrown ball from Nick Lamaison and went 58 yards for a touchdown.
The Renegades came back on their next drive to score. Negron, facing a strong rush, dumped a screen pass to Dean-Johnson, who broke a tackle and then outraced the Mounties' defense for the 55-yard TD play.
Josh Gallington gave the Renegades three more points when he made a 31-yard field goal with 2:07 left in the first half. He added a 39-yard field goal in the third quarter and remained perfect this season, 7-for-7 on field goals and 29-of-29 on PATs.
BC had a golden scoring chance in the first quarter on its first drive. The Renegades moved from their 37 to the Mount SAC 14. A delay of game penalty cost BC five yards, and running back Lee West fumbled on the next play with the Mounties recovering.
Aside from Dean-Johnson's touchdown play, the Mount SAC defense did a great job in the first half. BC had only eight first downs and 27 net rushing yards at halftime. Negron's 38 yards (30 on one play) was the only BC player with more than three rushing yards.
Negron was 5-of-15 for 103 yards but missed several open receivers. Campbell replaced him in the second quarter.
BC came into the game with only two turnovers in its first two games but had two on Saturday in the first 16 minutes of play.
