Josh Gallington has been perfect this season as Bakersfield College's place-kicker.
He made his biggest kick yet Saturday, a 35-yard field goal in overtime to give the Renegades a wild 27-24 win over Ventura College.
BC (6-1 overall, 2-0 National Northern Conference) trailed 24-10 entering the fourth quarter but scored two dramatic touchdowns to tie it, then kept Ventura off the scoreboard as the fourth quarter wound down and again when Ventura went on offense first in overtime.
Antavius Sims, Ventura's dominant running-passing quarterback, lived up to the hype by scoring all three Ventura touchdowns, on runs of 7, 38 and 6 yards.
But the Renegades sacked Sims nine times, including three times on Ventura's final drive as regulation wound down, and twice in overtime that prevented the Pirates (4-3, 1-1) from giving their kicker a chance at a field goal.
But before Gallington could even have a chance at winning it, the Renegades needed to rally in the fourth quarter.
BC wide receiver Loren Kolb, who finished with seven catches for 162 yards, got the Renegades closer with a 55-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Lyle Negron.
That came one play after Kolb made a brilliant catch for 37 yards on a pass from backup quarterback Byron Campbell with BC facing a third-and-21 from its own 8.
That was Campbell's only pass attempt. He was injured on the play when he was hit after letting the pass go. Negron, who had been pulled after an inconsistent passing game, re-entered and played the rest of the way.
The Renegades went for a first down on a fourth-and-2 from near midfield with 6:40 left in the game and trailing 24-17. Negron was stopped for a 1-yard loss, but three plays later, Sims was stripped of the ball by BC linebacker Tierney Yates and linebacker John Oglesby picked up the ball and raced 53 for the touchdown. Gallington's PAT tied it with 4:56 left in the game.
Until those two fourth-quarter scores, Ventura controlled the tempo and the Renegades struggled.
One week after Bakersfield had its best running game of the season, the ground game never got untracked against Ventura -- only 36 net yards.
BC also had two turnoverst that Ventura converted into touchdowns, and there were many other misfires.
They included a bad snap from center on the first play of the game that went for a 13-yard loss and an attempted Negron handoff to running back Julian Dean-Johnson when Dean-Johnson wound up on the wrong side of Negron so he couldn't even take the handoff.
The Renegades had zero first downs in the first quarter, when Ventura raced to a 14-0 lead. Until the Campbell to Kolb 37-yard pass, BC's longest play from scrimmage was only 15 yards.
BC had open receivers many times but either Negron mis-fired the passes or they were dropped. But Ventura also dropped two passes in critical situations on the last-ditch drive in regulation. A reception on either play would have set up Ventura's David Brown for a potential game-winning field goal.
Sims threw for 242 yards, but only 50 after halftime.
