Bakersfield College countered a nightmarish night of penalties with its best rushing performance of the season Saturday in a 52-14 romp over Moorpark College before 5,212 in Memorial Stadium.
BC (6-1 overall, 3-0 Northern National Conference) moved a half-game ahead of idle Ventura in the conference standings. Moorpark, which already had its worst start in the 42-year history of the program, fell to 0-6.
BC broke it open in the second half by rushing for tive touchdowns.
Sophomore running back Ben Estill had touchdown runs of 18, 51 and 2 yards, and a 19-yard TD run that was called back because of a chop-block penalty. He had a game-high 139 yards on 16 carries.
Julian Dean-Johnson added two fourth-quarter TD runs, covering 8 and 3 yards. He had 94 yards on five carries, with 86 of the yards on BC?226-130?s 91-yard touchdown drive capped by his 3-yard run.
Keldon Hampton added a 7-yard TD run for BC?226-130?s final score. He had 113 yards on 12 carries. Josh Gallington was 7-for-7 on PATs and added a 36-yard field goal.
Rishard Matthews got BC rolling on the game?226-130?s first play, a 68-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
Matthews, who is usually the deep back on kickoffs, instead lined up along the left sideline. The kickoff sailed straight to him. He caught it and ran straight up the sideline and wasn?226-130?t touched.
It appeared that BC might have seen something on tape, which would explain why Matthews lined up where he did. But head coach Jeff Chudy said it wasn't so dramatic.
"We expected the kick to be shorter," Chudy said. "Fortuantely it got a little deeper than they wanted it to. Rishard is a talented kid who makes things happen."
On BC's next possession, the penalty factor began. Estill had an apparent 19-yard touchdown run, but a chop block penalty wiped out that play and pushed the BC offense back 15 yards.
The drive stalled, and instead of seven points, BC settled for three, Gallington's field goal.
The Renegades made it 17-0 with 6:43 left in the second quarter when Estill ran up the middle for an 18-yard touchdown. That capped a seven-play, 91-yard drive and featured a 44-yard pass from quarterback Logan Kilgore to wideout Vince Van Horne with BC in a third-and-7 situation.
Moorpark scored with 1:04 left in the half on a 4-yard pass from quarterback Ian Shultis to 6-foot-1 wide receiver Chris Gant, who out-jumped the 5-6 Madu for the ball in the end zone.
That drive featured two fourth-down conversions by the Raiders, including a fourth-down pass interference call for an automatic first down. Moorpark also had great field position to start the drive after Andre Garcia returned the kickoff following Estill?226-130?s touchdown 48 yards to the Renegade 48-yard line.
BC had 67 yards in penalties in the first half and 108 in the game.
"We had penalties on both sides of the ball," Chudy said. "They?226-130?re drive stoppers on offense. ... Defensively, we had two pass interference calls (on fourth down) and a holding penalty. You can?226-130?t do that."
Moorpark, normally a running-oriented team, had only 36 net rushing yards. Raiders?226-130? quarterback Ian Shultis attempted 52 passes, completing 25 for 210 yards.
The BC offense had 389 net rushing yards and 174 passing yards.
"I thought we did a great job tonight," said quarterback Logan Kilgore, who was 8-of-16 for 136 yards. "Our running backs did great, our O-line did great. It was a solid team effort."
