Bakersfield College has swept all the top awards for the all-National Northern Conference selections.
Freshman quarterback Logan Kilgore was named the conference's Offensive Most Valuable Player and sophomore tackle Tyrone Crawford was selected Defensive MVP. And Jeff Chudy was chosen Coach of the Year.
BC went 6-0 in NNC play and 9-1 overall in the regular season. The Renegades will open the Southern California Regional Playoffs against Allan Hancock (9-1, 5-1 NNC) in Memorial Stadium Saturday starting at 3 p.m.
Seven other Renegades earned first-team all-conference honors, and five of them were unanimous picks.
Those five were center Jordan Mudge, running back Ben Estill, all-purpose player Rishard Matthews, defensive tackle Maurice Hayes and kicker Josh Gallington.
Other first-team choices were offensive guard Casey Sorrell and safety Tanner Webb.
Second-team picks were offensive tackle Joel Turribates, wide receiver Will Randle, all-purpose player Vince Van Horne, defensive end Brache Hayes, outside linebacker Tierney Yates, inside linebacker Joey Bertrand and cornerback Chika Madu.
The unanimous picks will be considered for spots on the all-state team.
Tickets to Saturday's Golden Empire Bowl are $10 for adults and $5 for children. There will be no reserved seating.
Ticket booths and the stadium will open at 1 p.m. Saturday. There won't be a tailgate contest this week.
A drawing will be held at halftime for two big-screen TVs. Two airline tickets to anywhere in the U.S. will also be given. Fans should hold onto their ticket stubs for potential winning numbers.
BC handed Allan Hancock its only loss on Oct. 10, a 31-24 game that wasn't decided until a fourth-down pass fell incomplete in the BC end zone with two seconds left.
Suffice it to say, Hancock should be sky-high for the rematch. BC coach Jeff Chudy said he thinks his squad will be emotionally charged up as well.
"The way we're approaching it: If you want to keep playing, you'd better win," Chudy said. "Whether we're playing these guys or (top-ranked) Mount SAC, what does it matter? We're playing guys capable of winning a state championship."
Since BC and Hancock are both in the National Northern Conference, they play each other annually. The games have always seemed to be physical, hard-hitting events, and Saturday's should be the same.
One thing the Renegades learned from the Oct. 10 meeting is the need to play four solid quarters. The Renegades nearly let a 24-3 third-quarter lead slip away in that meeting.
"We learned these people are resilient," Chudy said. "We didn't play very well in the fourth quarter that night and they did. We learned we'd better be a four-quarter team."
