BC volleyball still perfect in WSC play

GLENDALE -- Bakersfield College improved to 6-0 in Western State Conference volleyball play with a 25-18, 25-12, 25-16 win over Glendale College on Tuesday.

BC had a season-best .648 hitting percentage with only five errors. The previous season high was in the .400s, coach Carl Ferreira said.

LaPorsha Singh had nine kills in 14 attempts and Corissa Alvarez had eight kills in 10 attempts. Neither had an error.

Chelsea Rose had 46 set assists and two service aces.

Glendale fell to 4-2 in WSC play. On Friday, BC hosts 5-1 College of the Canyons in the team's second annual breast cancer awareness night, "Attacking the Cure."

T-shirts will be sold with proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.

BC falls in soccer

SANTA MONICA -- Santa Monica College took a 2-0 halftime lead, then held on to beat Bakersfield College 2-1 in women's soccer.

BC scored in the 70th minute off a corner kick to the far post, which was headed toward the goal by Amber Beckham. Terryn Soelberg then scored.

BC (6-7-2 overall, 4-3-1 Western State Conference South Division) held Santa Monica (No. 3 in Southern California) to one shot on goal in the second half.

BC men run to 8th

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Bakersfield College placed eighth in the men's competition and 10th in the women's at the Western State Conference cross country championships at Cuesta College.

The BC men qualified for the Southern California championships Nov. 7 at Mount San Antonio College. The BC women will learn Sunday if they'll qualify as an at-large team.

The BC men had 206 points. Glendale (34), Ventura (82) and Oxnard (104) were the top three.

The top individual finisher for BC was Francisco Mejia, who was 16th in 22:40 over the 4-mile, rolling hills course. The race winner was Francisco Quijada from Glendale in 21:30.

The BC women scored 254 on the 5-K course. Glendale (20), Cuesta (89) and Ventura (140) were the top three.

BC had two runners qualify as individuals for the SoCal meet if the Renegades don't earn a team spot. They were Emnet Habedo, who was 39th in 21:59.9, and Emilley Leming, who was 44th in 22:18.7.
