BC women suffer first loss of year

Santa Barbara City College handed Bakersfield College its first women's basketball loss of the season Wednesday, 70-64, in the Gil Bishop Sports Center.
Alexi Smith had 15 pints, Julie Thomas had 14 and Ashlee Taira had 12 for the Renegades (2-1). Francesca DeAngelis had 25 points for Santa Barbara (3-1).
BC had a 10-point lead with nine minutes to play but scored only eight points in the last five minutes.
BC hosts Reedley College at 5 p.m. Saturday.
CSUB volleyball signs 4
Four high school seniors have signed letters of intent with the Cal State Bakersfield volleyball program.
CSUB coach John Price confirmed the signing of Samantha Whittington, a setter at Frontier, whose signing was reported in Wednesday's Californian.
Also signing with CSUB were Hannah Fortin, a 6-foot outside hitter from Apple Valley-Granite Hills; Haleigh Haratyk, a 5-11 outside hitter from Corona-Centennial; and Chelcy Motes, 5-11 middle blocker from Thatcher (Ariz.) High.
Fortin is a three-time All-Desert Sky League pick. Haratyk was the Big VIII League MVP this season. Motes led her team to the Division 2A state title her junior year and second in the state this year.
Whittington is a three-time All-Southwest Yosemite League first-team pick and leads her team into tonight's CIF Central Section Division II title match vs. Garces.
