One of baseball's all-time icons, Hall of Famer Tommy Lasorda, has agreed to be the special guest speaker at the 22nd annual BC Baseball Hot Stove Dinner on Jan. 23.
Long regarded as one of baseball's most popular figures, Lasorda just finished his 60th season as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. He retired from managing after the 1996 season, having compiled 1,599 wins and two World Series championships in 20 years with the team. He was inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame in 1997, his first year of eligibility.
He currently serves as a special advisor to the chairman of the board of the Dodgers.
Funds from the dinner benefit the Bakersfield College baseball program but also various local youth baseball groups as well. The main project this year is to light the baseball field at Bakersfield Christian High School. Previously money has been used to lights BC's Gerry Collis Field, erect two scoreboards, install dugouts and a storage facility plus the purchase of various field maintenance equipment. A baseball player's clubhouse was finished some 5 years ago. Some 1,000 new bleacher seats have been added this year by the school, making it one of the top junior college facilities in the nation.
Tickets are priced at $200 each or a reserved table for six with signage can be purchased for $1,000. Tickets are available at Mike's Uniforms, BASE Athletics, Floyd's Office Furniture, Mr. Tuxedo or from any of the BC players or coaches. Seating is limited and tickets will not be sold at the door.
