College roundup: BC captures 4th straight COS tourney

E.J. Kirby and Skyler Vaden earned co-MVP honors as the Bakersfield College men's basketball team won the College of the Sequoias Tournament for the fourth straight year.
Kirby scored 19 points and Vaden added 17 in a 91-77 victory over Contra Costa in the championship game at Visalia.
Bobby Fisher added 15 points and 18 rebounds for the Renegades (11-2). Fisher and Chase Adams, who scored 12 points, were named to the all-tournament team.
BC is off this week. The 'Gades will play in the Allan Hancock Tournament in Santa Maria beginning Monday.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
USC pulled away from Cal State Bakerfield in the second half en route to a 93-56 victory in the championship game of the Women of Troy Basketball Classic.
Katie Williams led the Roadrunners (5-7) with a game-high 21 points, extending her double-digit scoring streak to 29 contests. Tamiko Davis recorded her second double-double of the season, grabbing 10 rebounds to go along with 11 points.
Williams and Davis were named to the all-tournament team. Williams averaged 23.5 points over the weekend and Davis grabbed a total of 18 rebounds.
CSUB will host University of Miami (Ohio) at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Icardo Center.
WRESTLING
Elijah Nacita and Riley Oroczo each placed fourth, leading the Cal State Bakersfield wrestling team to a 14th-place finish at the 2009 Reno Tournament of Champions.
After losing his opening match at 141 pounds, Nacita won six straight consolation matches. He lost 2-1 to Cal State Fullerton's Adin Duenas in the third-place match.
Orozco, seeded No. 4 at 197, won his first three matches before falling 13-6 to top seed Alan Gelogaev of Oklahoma State. Orozco dropped a 4-3 decision to Erik Schuth of Ohio in the third-place match.
Joey Granata (165) won his first two matches, then fell 10-4 to No. 2 seed Dan Vallimont of Penn State. He bounced back to claim an 11-5 decision over Cal Poly's Travis Rasmussen, a Bakersfield High product. Granata the lost 4-2 to Michael Cuthbertson of Boise State.
Heavyweight Mitch Monteiro went 2-2. The No. 2 seed won a pair of matches to begin the day, then lost 7-3 to Arvin High grad Ricky Alcala of UC Davis and 10-6 to David Wade of Eastern Michigan.
In a battle for Roadrunner teammates, Frank Lomas defeated Tyler Iwamura 12-5 at 125 pounds.
Lomas went 2-2. Iwamura was 1-2.
At 149, John Cardenas and Anthony Box each went 1-2. Mike Larson (184) was 2-2 and Andrew Balch (157) finished 1-2.
At 133 lbs., 174 lbs. and heavyweight, respectively, Justin Durham (133), Daniel Montanez (174) and David Morgan (heavyweight) each went 0-2.
CSUB will compete in the Southern Scuffle on Dec. 29-30 in Greensboro, N.C.
