There was no letdown Saturday night by Bakersfield College.

The Renegades took advantage of seven turnovers by Antelope Valley College -- converting five of those into touchdowns -- in a 63-7 win before 5,283 in Memorial Stadium.

BC (3-0) led 42-0 at halftime and mainly played backups in the second half. The Marauders fell to 0-3.

"We're starting to play more as a team now," said freshman linebacker John Oglesby, who had two of the Renegades' three sacks. "We got a chance to see a lot of different people get a chance to play."

The Renegades were coming off a come-from-behind 41-24 win over highly touted Saddleback. Coach Jeff Chudy said he was looking for four solid quarters of play by his Renegades against Antelope Valley.

"We competed in every phase of the game," Chudy said. "We came out and flew around the ball. Even when we made mistakes, we were going 100 mph."

BC had six first-half touchdowns by six different players on all sides of the ball.

Andre Smith (5 yards) and Julian Dean-Johnson (4 yards) had first-quarter TD runs. George Robbins (11 yards) and Brandon Hobdy (30 yards) had TD receptions from quarterback Lyle Negron, and the Renegades also had an 86-yard punt return for a score by Lee West and a 35-yard fumble return for a TD by Zach Vasquez.

Vasquez took the ball away from Antelope Valley wide receiver Darrien Hudson after a reception.

In the first half, Antelope Valley (0-3) lost two-of-four fumbles and threw three interceptions. West also had a 66-yard punt return that set up Dean-Johnson's TD run.

Smith had 42 rushing yards on seven carries in the first half, leaving him 9 yards short of becoming the 25 - th player in Renegade history with 1,000 career yards. He did not play in the second half.

The Renegades had their first turnover of the season in the third quarter Saturday when backup quarterback Byron Campbell fumbled a snap from center at the Antelope Valley 6. But the Maruaders fumbled on their next play, and BC's Ridge James recovered. West scored on a 1-yard run three plays later.

Antelope Valley has now lost eight fumbles and thrown seven interceptions this season.

"There's no secret that the team that turns the ball over less is going to win," said BC offensive coordinator Carl Dean. "The defense played well. They put us on a short field (with turnovers deep in Antelope Valley territory) which put us in a favorable situation."

Despite the 63 points, Chudy said the offense wasn't able to generate great success. BC had only 182 rushing yards and 168 passing yards.

"We had so many turnovers that gave us the ball in the red zone it was hard to get into a rhythm," Chudy said. "But it was fun to see guys hitting guys other than ourselves."

Antelope Valley ended BC's shutout bid when quarterback Josh Firm found wide receiver Kenny Harmon in the back of the end zone on a fourth-down play from the 14 with 1:22 left in the third quarter.

The Renegades replaced Negron with Campbell with 3:04 left in the first half, and the Renegades played their backups extensively after that.

It was the most points allowed by Antelope Valley since a 66-7 loss to Grossmont in the final game of the 2002 season.

West finished with 234 yards on five punt returns.
