Jam lose season opener to Thunderbirds

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The Bakersfield Jam couldn't maintain a strong first-quarter effort Friday in a 102-81 season-opening loss to the Albuquerque Thunderbirds.
The Jam held a 26-17 at the end of the first quarter, but was outscored 85-55 over the final 36 minutes.
Carlos Powell's 20 points and nine rebounds led the T-Birds, who led 49-46 at halftime. The Thunderbirds had five other players score in double figures.
Reece Gaines led Bakersfield with 19 points. Jared Newson added 18 and Justin Hawkins pitched in 16.
The Jam faces the L.A. D-Fenders at 9:30 p.m. today at Staples Center following the Lakers-Nets game.
