Two men who will represent Kern County in the state Assembly — one new, one an incumbent — were sworn into office Monday.

Vince Fong, R-Bakersfield, replaced Shannon Grove as representative of the 34th Assembly District. Rudy Salas, D-Bakersfield, began his third two-year term representing the 32nd Assembly District.

Fong pledged in a news release to put "everyday Americans first."

“We must remove the burdens that have decimated jobs and hurt our local small businesses, bring water to our communities and farmers, allow energy production to power our economy, protect our military installations and our veterans, and provide educational opportunities so our students can succeed,” Fong said.

Salas serves as chair of the Assembly Committee on Business and Professions and is a member of the Agriculture, Governmental Organization, Veterans Affairs, and Water Parks & Wildlife committees, he said in a statement.

“I plan to take on the issues that matter to the Central Valley, like increasing water availability, protecting jobs, improving our schools, and keeping communities safe. I am humbled to have been re-elected to this office and look forward to the work ahead.”
