Manuel Ramirez, a Republican challenging Assemblyman Rudy Salas, D-Bakersfield, joined the Off the Press show earlier this summer to talk about his background, why he's running for office and the unique way he entered the Assembly race.

Salas was initially running unopposed in the June primary election. Ramirez missed the deadline to get on the June ballot but did manage to register as certified write-in candidate.

As he was the only official write-in candidate for the seat, and he received at least one vote, California's top-two primary system made him the official Republican candidate for the Nov. 8 general election.
