Off The Press

Kern County Superior Court Judge Cory Woodward held a frank discussion on Off the Press Aug. 31 about why he got into the legal profession, his experience developing his skills as a judge and the political fight he faces to defend his seat on the bench from Deputy District Attorney Tiffany Organ-Bowles.

He talked about his decision to pursue a law degree after his law-minded brother died in a traffic accident when Woodward was a teen.

He talked about his desire to become a judge that was compassionate and respected everyone in his courtroom.

He talked about the learning curve for him as he left the Kern County District Attorney’s office and became a judge in the small Superior Court branch in Mojave.

And Woodard discussed his censure for having an affair with his court clerk in 2012 and 2013 and said the only reason he faces a re-election challenge is because of that mistake.

He took responsibility for the action and said he has earned the forgiveness of his wife, family and God. The experience, he said, has make him a more sensitive judge and more understanding of the imperfect lives of the people who come into his courtroom.

Voters should support him, he said, because he has great deal more experience serving on the bench — experience he said his opponent does not have.

Watch video of the show, co-hosted by The Californian’s James Burger, government affairs consultant Russell Johnson and Cal State Bakersfield political science faculty member Nicole Parra.

And tune in Thursday at 3 p.m. on bakersfield.com and on The Californian’s facebook page as Off the Press welcomes Kern High School District candidate Jennifer Bloomquist.
