Kamala Harris easily defeated Loretta Sanchez in the race to succeed Sen. Barbara Boxer, The Sacramento Bee reports.

Harris, a state attorney general, overwhelmed Sanchez, a veteran congresswoman, elevating her to become the state’s first woman of color to serve in the U.S. Senate.

Harris will be the first Indian-American and the second black female senator.

Harris and Sanchez emerged from a primary field of 34 candidates to challenge for California’s first open U.S. Senate seat in nearly a quarter century.
