BPD Sgt. Dennis Moore.

Bakersfield Police Department

A memorial service has been scheduled for Bakersfield Police Department Sgt. Dennis Moore, who died unexpectedly Wednesday morning after experiencing what police called a "major medical event."

The service, which is open to the public, will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 17, at Riverlakes Community Church.

Gov. Jerry Brown on Thursday ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of the sergeant.

Moore was a 20-year veteran of the BPD. He previously worked for the Arvin Police Department, according to police.

He is survived by his wife and three adult children.
