An 8-month-old Los Angeles baby died early Saturday in a car wreck on Interstate 5 in rural Lebec.

A family of six was traveling northbound on I-5 during rain in a 2007 Silverado pickup truck when the vehicle suddenly left the roadway and overturned north of the east truck escape ramp at 6:40 p.m.

All the truck occupants were airlifted and transported to Kern Medical Center, where the infant, Noe Garcia, died. The baby's mother was ejected and was in critical condition Saturday. Other family members suffered minor injuries.

A 32-year-old man suffered second-degree burns over 20 percent of his body Saturday evening after he crashed into a median in northwest Bakersfield and the car burst into flames, according to the Kern County Fire Department.

Skid marks showed the man was going east on Brimhall Road and trying to turn right onto Calloway Drive when he hit the median. It happened at about 7:30 p.m.; the man was taken to Kern Medical Center.

Authorities and witnesses said there was no indication a second vehicle was involved.

At 3:10 a.m. Saturday, Kern County fire fighters controlled a 1,200-square-foot dwelling fire at 1935 Gaston St. in Wasco. Battalion 3 engine companies were assisted by Engine 9-31, from the California Correctional Institution at Wasco.

Four engine company crews staffed by 14 people confined the fire to the area of origin; protected residents from the fire; and conserved property. The fire was controlled at 3:43 a.m.

Fire crews held losses to $75,000. Crews saved more than $100,000 in potential structural and contents damages. The Red Cross is assisting county fire in providing for the needs of the four-person family, which was displaced.

The fire's cause is being investigated.
